What data binding is
Data binding connects a widget to a data source. Only after binding does a widget know which data it should show. Without a data binding, the widget stays empty and shows a note that it still needs configuration.
The text widget is the only exception. It does not require a data binding.
Select a data source
In widget settings, choose under Data source which imported data source the widget should use. The list shows all data sources that exist in your organization and are available for assignment.
For integrations such as Google Analytics 4, there are two steps: first the provider is connected, then a concrete property is selected for dashboards. If a widget sends you to Integrations, the property selection or primary property is usually missing. Only when the interface shows Update permissions do you need to authorize Google again.
Metrics and dimensions
After selecting a data source, you define what the widget shows:
- Metrics - numeric values the widget calculates or aggregates, such as revenue, clicks, or sessions
- Dimensions - categories that split the data, such as channel, campaign, or date
Which metrics and dimensions are available depends on the selected data source.
Number of bindings per type
How many metrics and dimensions a widget can accept depends on its type:
| Widget type | Metrics | Dimension |
|---|---|---|
| Line chart | up to 10 | 1 (time axis) |
| Bar or column chart | up to 3 | 1 |
| Pie or donut chart | 1 | 1 |
| Polar chart | 1 | 1 |
| Radar chart | up to 3 | 1 |
| KPI widget | 1 | - |
| Table widget | up to 10 | none in time view, 1 in category view |
Change a data binding
You can change the data source and the selected metrics and dimensions at any time in widget settings. The change takes effect only after saving the dashboard.
